Can anyone have
a wet room??
In theory yes. A
wet room is basically a shower room without a shower tray, with an open
spacious feeling, and generally fully tiled.
If your bathroom
is small you may need to have a deflector screen to zone the water spray.
Water drainage
Installing a wet
room is a job for professionals, due to the complexity of the job. A gradient
needs to be created within the floor for the water to drain away correctly, and
the whole floor needs to be fully waterproofed. This is called tanking.
A common method
of creating the fall for the water is to install a sub floor made from wpb ply,
which is then tiled over.
Another method
is by installing a pre made sloping shower former, which gives the same effect
as a shower tray, but is then tiled over.
Last but not
least is a method by using a giant preformed tray often known as a hi macs
system, this product slopes towards the drain and is fitted over the complete
floor space, and does nor require tiling on top of.
Waterproofing
Waterproofing /
tanking the wet room involves many different types of methods, from bitumen
membranes for the floor, waterproof boards sealed with a syrupy membrane, to
rolls of waterproof tanking that is applied and stick on using flexible floor
adhesive. Once set the room can be tiled.
It is also worth
raising the bathroom door threshold slightly, just in case someone covers the
drain with a towel, this will keep the water contained .
