Roman unveils new shower products

29th Jul 2010

Roman has recently announced the new additions to their Embrace range of shower enclosures, with three additional products on offer

The enhanced range includes a curvaceous Quadrant enclosure, which features space-efficient sliding doors offering a large showering area while taking up less external space when opened. The sliding doors open nice and smooth to each side of the enclosure with their smooth running roller bearings - they offer a seamless entry into the enclosure. They have a sleek and sophisticated design of the ergonomic handle ensures safe and stylish entry to the showering area. The Curved Quadrant comes with an option of a thermostatic integrated digital valve which is nicely incorporated into the corner profile of the enclosure for a minimalist ultra modern look, available in a range of sizes; 800 x 800, 900x 900, 1000 x 1000, 800x 900, and 800 x 1000mm.

Over-bath showering, where the available space often wont allow for a separate shower enclosure and bath, the Embrace range offers a clean and contemporary bath screen. The Embrace bath screen feature thick toughened glass panels and the sealing system which incorporates a clear see through seal down the length of the pivot mechanism, ensuring thw areas that are prone to leakage remain water tight whilst still allowing 180 degree movement of the glass panel. For complete reassurance a barrier in the form of a subtle aluminium strip runs the length of the bath screen, and is stuck to the bath to form a proper seal ensuring it is suitable for use with power showers.

The final addition to the Embrace range is the high quality Hinged Door which features 8mm thick toughened glass and in a range of size options; 760, 800, 900 & 1000mm. The Hinged Door can be usedin an alcove situation, or teamed with a genuine side panel, to suit your space and comes with the option of the thermostatic integrated digital valve as mentioned earlier.

David Osborne the Managing Director at Roman, commented: “We are very pleased with the success of the Embrace range. Our Design Team have been very hard at work to create the new collection of products. They are designed to perfectly suit the style conscious and price sensitive end of the market, with all the most popular shapes, sizes and styles of enclosures - without compromising on style. Roman provides showering solutions for all budgets and individual needs.”

New Triton Shower makes it big

24th Jul 2010

As consumers often expect products to increase in technology but reduce in size over time, Triton has launched two new ‘mini’ concentric mixers and four ‘mini’ sequential mixers to give the same easy to install benefits as the existing, larger counterparts, but housed in a sleek, compact products.

The two ‘mini’ Thames concentric mixer showers and two ‘mini’ Thames and Mersey sequential models incorporate flexible fitting options, the ranges are ideal for use across new, replacement and refurbishment projects without any extra hassle.

All of the fixings needed to make pipe work connections and, for the concentric range only, to alter the inlet distance, are included in the box with the shower.

The mini mixers are also ideal for new builds that have limited timber and plasterboard wall cavity depth. The minimum building – in depth for a mini mixer is 50mm, which is a big advantage over many other mixers, some of which need at least 68mm.

• NEW THAMES ‘MINI’ CONCENTRIC

Following the same stylish concentric design and separate flow and temperature controls as the standard Thames products, the new mini valves collection works for projects where space is limited or simply a sleeker look is required.

150mm or 110mm inlet flexibility

Suitable for the direct replacement of existing bar mixer or exposed concentric models, the inlet of the new exposed concentric models can be installed where inlet centres are 150mm apart.

Giving further flexibility for new or refurb projects, it is also possible to reduce the elbow fitting in line with the smaller size of the valve, accommodating a 110mm inlet width.

For ease, Triton has incorporated the shorter elbow fittings required in the same box. All elbow fittings are easily inserted into the main valve and locked into place to accept the rising, falling and concealed supplies.

• ‘MINI’ SEQUENTIAL

Sequential showers are now rising in popularity at the entry level of the mixer market; mainly due to simplicity in the design but also, with only one control for on/off and temperature control selection, the ease of use for the end user.

Triton has expanded its sequential mixer options with the addition of two new Thames and two new Mersey mini sequential mixer valves. Available in both exposed and built-in formats they are ideal for projects where a compact size is important.

Accommodating 150mm water inlet widths only, the mini sequential showers are again suitable for new, replacement and refurbishment projects. Features such as flat face union-fit fixings make installation of the built-in models straightforward as the valve can simply be slid in between the pipe work and secured.

With the quality you’d expect from Triton, the ‘mini’ mixers come with a five year guarantee, and have the back up of Triton’s customer support before, during and after installation.

How you box in your wall-mounted loo

4th Jul 2010

Wall-hung loos can enhance the sense of space in your bathroom or en-suite, but how do you go about boxing it in once it's been fitted?

The cistern and pipework need to be fitted into some kind of frame hidden away, and this frame also supports the the sanitaryware, which would usually be supported by the floor. You can either create a frame with wooden battens or use a metal frame system from specialist companies, such as Gerberit orMissell. The benefit of a pre-built frame is that you don't need to construct anything on site, you just buy the size of frame you need, fit the sanitaryware to it, then box in around it with either plywood or plasterboard ready for tiling. Expect to pay ÂŁ100+ for a frame here.

Whichever method you choose [wood battens or metal frame], you will need to box around it with plywood (for tiles) or plasterboard (if you are painting - the plasterboard will need to be plastered over before painting) and fixing tiles or paint as you would on any other surface.

You may find the cistern is included in the package price of your toilet, but more commonly it is not. The cistern needs to be compatible with the frame system. Some companies, such as Gerberit, include a cistern as part of the frame package. Flush plates also need to be compatible with the cistern. They might be included in the cistern price, or you may have to buy it separately. If you are buying any of these items separately, check with the supplier that the cistern will fit the frame and the flush fits the cistern.

You shouldn't need to get to the cistern at all if it has been fitted correctly. However, it's always a good idea when you are boxing around your frame or batten system to have a panel you can unscrew and remove if needed. Whether your removable panel is on top of your boxed section or on the wall will depend on the design of your room and the whether your cistern is accessed from the front or top.

The style of a toilet is dictated almost entirely by the pan and, although some toilets need to be fitted with specific seats, many can be mixed and matched. You might choose to spend on the pan but make your toilet more affordable by picking up a cheaper seat. The most expensive seats are quick release and soft close, which means they open and shut with the smallest movement and without slamming. However, they can add a couple of hundred pounds to the cost of your toilet, but if you are going to do it do it properly advises Steve Meyrick Bathroom Fitters UK.

I had many estimates for my planned bathroom installation, some bathroom fitter quoted seemed too cheap and some way too expensive.  Steve from Bathroom Fitters UK then gave me a quote, it was middle of the road in comparison, what won it was his knowledge, how upfront he was and we generally felt he was trustworthy. True to his word we could not pick a fault during the whole process. Very, very pleased, thank you for my dream bathroom.... Liz and Greg

How to choose a bathroom shower

16th May 2010

When you choose a shower for your bathroom there are a few things to think about, from whether or not to have a separate, enclosed shower or fit one ever a bath. Then all the different shower choices, from power showers to water saving showers, and you need to decide how you're going to heat the water for it.

The types of Bathroom Showers

Things likely to influence these bathroom choices are the space you have in your bathroom and the cost involved. At the very top end of the design arena are the large built-in steam shower enclosures which can seat two people, have phones and radios or a wet room with a drencher mixer shower complete with a pump to give you a rainfall type showering experience

Or a humble push-on rubber hose pipe shower attachment for the taps, a sorry and near useless device to be avoided at all costs we at Bathroom Fitters UK hope!!

Options for Over the Bath Showers

For the many who dont have the space for a separate shower enclosure, or you want to keep your bath as opposed to replacing it with a shower cubicle, then you will install a shower over the bath. You can have a shower curtain suspended from a rail, or a solid toughened glass or clear plastic panel that will shield the bathroom from the worst of the water, the later keeps the bathroom feeling more spacious and less cluttered.

Curtains are better at keeping the water in the bath but inevitably get mouldy and can be dangerous for the very young or very elderly. The shower screens allow for a cleaner line which is more likely to be in keeping with a modern contemporary bathroom design but water can get around them if the shower head is positioned wrong.

Different Mixer Shower Types

If you go for the shower over bath route you can put in a electric shower, however it makes more sense to have a mixer shower or one that can be integrated with the plumbing for the bath water, then you can use the hot water from the tank as well. The cheapest units of this kind are all one combined tap and shower unit and are susceptible to temperature changes.

Going upmarket a little brings you into the world of separate thermostatic shower controls, wall mounted. These work in a similar way but at least you don't have to bend down to reach the controls every time someone turns a tap elsewhere in the property. If you can go up a step further then thermostatically controlled mixer showers are in that range, these will stay at a set temperature.

Power Showers and Alternatives

Power showers can be either electric or mixer style, the thing that makes them great is that they have an electrically powered pump which pushes the water out faster and harder.

Shower Enclosures and Shower Head Design

With the space and the money for a separate shower enclosure or wet room which may come in the design of a disabled bathroom, however the shower options remain the same, being either a self-contained electric shower that only need just cold water feed, or the various mixer types of showers discussed above. But if you have more money to spend there are some very extravagant shower drencher heads available to use in enclosures.

There are large circular chrome heads that rain a curtain of water on you, like the cloudburst shower design heads that look like something out of a movie and many more. If you push the boat out you can go for shower towers which have a series of jets on a wall-mounted unit at different heights so that you get sprayed all over your body as well as from a shower rose above your head.

This brings you quite a way along the road to the luxurious shower we mentioned at the start of this article, getting all the way there is all down to the size of your purse.

Bathroom Fitters UK will advise you on the best type for your water system and showering requirements. for details telephone 07977 405965 of email by clicking here

Bathroom storage is the key to a low maintenance bathroom

6th May 2010

Steve Meyrick - Bathroom Fitters UK's head of design recognises that Bathroom storage is an area where a little work can pay a big dividend for clients, being able to hide the the day to day bathroom products can make a bathroom look a lot larger. With bathing, beauty products and the teeth paraphernalia the bathroom is often the home for the cleaning stuff and medicines. Then of course there are the towels and flannels, not to mention bath toys if you have young children.

Wall Mounted Bathroom Cabinets

The bathroom planning of storage often start with bathroom cabinets. They come in various forms and sizes and often have mirrored doors so they can perform a dual function. Be careful when placing them above basins and toilets though though, if items fall out of the cupboard they can damage items below, or if a basin is quite small then people may keep banging their heads on the mirror as they bend to wash their face or rinse a toothbrush.

If you've got the space, go for a double bathroom cabinet or maybe two individual ones. But if you do go for more than one, don't mount them next to each other unless your bathroom is really big. Try and put the second one on a different wall.

Bathroom Vanities

Most bathroom cabinets are available as floor standing units that can double as bathroom vanity unit. Most providing support for a basin so that it doesn't require such large screws to hold it to the wall. Although very useful pieces of bathroom furniture, they are often robbed of space by the sink trap and waste outlet pipework which has to be positioned beneath under the basin. However, with a 300 deep unit and the correct thought out plumbing installation, this is minimised on the positive side, this does ensure that the pipework is hidden away neatly.

Free Standing Bathroom Cabinets

If you have a good sized room, a bathroom cabinet can be a free standing piece of furniture and even be wardrobe sized.

If that's possible then it can be used as storage for towels etc therefore a handy bit of kit if you have a combi boiler hence no airing cupboard. It's not often that any bathroom furniture other than a suite can be fitted into a bathroom but if you do have the space it ought to be used

If you have the requirements for a bathroom storage design email me details and size of room / bathroom layout and i will be pleased to offer advice and a full quotation

Lakes Shower Enclosures - business is booming.....

2nd May 2010

Shower enclosure specialist, Lakes Bathrooms, has grown throughout the recession and the business continues to expand its range, its workforce and fleet. At financial year end the company reported a 24 per cent growth in turnover for 2009.

"I feel extremely fortunate to be able to announce revenue growth in the last 12 months plus a considerable improvement in pre tax profit, which is up by 133 per cent on the previous year," said Lakes Bathrooms’ managing director, Robin Craddock. "We have seen great demand, despite the recession and, whilst we face the challenges that the financial markets have created, our capital stability means we have been able to increase our production capacity in 2009 and are now looking for a larger HQ."

In the past year Lakes Bathrooms has recruited John Armstrong as North East sales manager, who joins the company from Roman. Two new service engineers have joined; Alan Cox to cover North London and East Anglia, plus John Bissel who serves the Midlands. Two administrators have been recruited to the sales team and most recently Kevin Boyle has been appointed to lead the customer service team. Boyle is an ex-Indesit customer care expert and has over 20 years experience in the white goods market, so was selected for his volume manufacturing background together with experience in delivering leading brand service standards.

Other major staff moves within the company have seen appointments to the board for Rob Ashmeade, appointed finance director and Clive Organ as sales and marketing director. They now join the board to support managing director, Robin Craddock and chairman, Alan Craddock.

Lakes’ delivery fleet has doubled in size in the last 18 months to a total of 12 vehicles. Its delivery coverage is backed by a separate nation-wide team of service engineers who support retailers, merchants and installers with technical back-up and point of sales display installation.

Robin Craddock puts the sustained business success down to a number of factors: “We hold considerable stock in the UK and our speed of delivery means that we have won a number of important new trade accounts. Our pricing to quality ratio is well geared and we have announced a price freeze for 2010 on all products in our Classic Collection, in an effort to offset the effect of the VAT returning to 17.5 per cent and to ensure that we still represent the best overall value in the market. Our complete service ethos is now recognised and we have continued to innovate with two new product ranges being launched in the last year. We are now working on new designs that will be unveiled later in 2010 and we continue to develop business with our AllClear coating, in a number of different markets.

According to management at Lakes Bathrooms, the HQ relocation is likely to take place by the end of the year and will see the firm moving to a larger site in the same part of Gloucestershire.

The bathroom fitters can save you money on our competititions prices and give you an showroom bathroom!! read on!! lol

17th Apr 2010

According to a recent Dolphin survey, the UK’s bathrooms are in dire need of a spring clean. Almost 70% of those surveyed said they currently had up to 10 unused pamper products, with the remainder having up to 30 bottles, packs and tubes simply gathering dust. The bathroom cabinet takes most of this strain for half of those surveyed, followed by the windowsill and around the edge of the bath. A quarter of respondents claimed that too much bathroom clutter was a cause of argument at home, with 57% of households choosing to have a clear out every so often to keep on top of everything.

Shampoo is the most wasted product, closely followed by shower gel (which came top with men as the most wasted item) and moisturiser, (which was the most neglected beauty product by women). Over a quarter of respondents said their bathroom also held host to out of date medicines but most shockingly, 54% said that they would still use them regardless, with men proving to be particularly lax on this issue.

The most common reasons provided for hoarding so many unused or out of date items in the bathroom was because people ‘forgot they were there’ and ‘always buy too much and never get round to using it’, whilst 58% said the majority of their unused toiletry items were from unwanted gift packs.

Special store promotions were also cited as a key reason why Brits buy more products than they need, with 61% saying they would still take up a multi-buy offer even if they knew they wouldn’t get around to using it all.

One fifth of those surveyed by Dolphin estimated that they had wasted just over £20 on unused pampering products whilst it seems the Welsh spend the most, at an average of £24.72, compared to the more conscientious West Midlander’s spending £19.85. This isn’t surprising as the Welsh also have the highest average number of unused toiletries within the UK and are more likely to take advantage of ‘buy one get one free’ offers despite the fact that many products simply get stored away never to be used.

Geoff Wells, planning expert at Dolphin Bathrooms, comments: “Whilst we may be a nation of pamper addicts, we accumulate too many beauty products that we never intend to use (according to 40% of participants) and this often means bathrooms can be cluttered. It comes as no surprise to us that over 60% of those we questioned wished they had more storage space in the bathroom, as it is often the smallest room in UK homes but despite this, we can’t seem to stop ourselves hoarding and so end up losing precious space.

“However, with careful planning, any bathroom can be designed to keep lotions and potions well organised and easy to find. Clever use of cabinets, sink space and shelving will make sure you optimise every inch of space whilst keeping your bathroom beautiful - plus you can avoid wasting money on new products you don’t actually need after all.”

Geoff Wells added: “Space in the bathroom can often be limited, so careful planning of storage solutions and overall room design is vital in creating the perfect bathroom enabling you to maximise your available space and create a clutter-free environment. Even a larger bathroom can be spoiled by a badly laid out design that does not use the room to its full potential.

“Custom-made floor and wall cabinets offer a great solution for storing towels and toiletries, keeping surfaces completely clear and the bathroom looking streamlined whilst stylish vanity units with shelves, drawers and cabinets hide belongings from view and can be built around sanitary-ware to cover up any unattractive pipe work.

“Corner vanity units are especially suitable for smaller bathrooms, making the most of an unused area of the room and to really maximise space, consider space-saving solutions such as corner baths or sinks to make the most of an unused area of the room and opt for wall hung sanitary ware, cabinets, taps and towel rails to leave floor space clear and the bathroom accessible.

“Fitted bathroom furniture is now big news and ideal for creating ample storage. Offering a ‘complete’ look which allows everything to flow together with simple clean lines Dolphin’s modern, fitted furniture range, Verve, exemplifies just how far fitted designs have come. Moving away from the more conventional-style fitted furniture that most homeowners will fear; attention to detail is also paramount with Verve. Boasting curved fronted units, with striking high gloss finishes, a choice of standard or solid surface worktops and soft-close drawers as standard, Dolphin’s Verve collection will bring style to any bathroom.

“The new Envy furniture range is the latest option to be introduced, seen in the 2010 Cube and Neptune bathroom ranges. Sleek and modular in design, Envy provides an elegant way to keep toiletries and towels organised and in their place.”

A fully fitted Dolphin bathroom starts from ÂŁ6,000, including full design, technical survey, delivery and complete installation. So if you would like to on average half this cost then contact Bathroom Fitters UK on 07977 405965 or email by clicking here

The product is a very High-quality design at a competitive price – that’s what the new “Eurosmart Cosmopolitan“ is all about. The new faucet line emerged as the clear winner from a personal preference test among home users, who simply loved the modern and clear design.
These faucets not only incorporate quality, top-of-the-line technology but also score big on versatility. The various wash basin variants of the Eurosmart Cosmopolitan – as a traditional single-lever mixer or with high spout – supplied as two-hole and three-hole wash basin models all share the same modern design. The extras are especially smart – the shower faucet can easily be combined with a convenient tray for shower gel and other items. A matching hand shower for the bathtub completes the perfect Eurosmart Cosmopolitan bathroom. Available from March, the new faucet line will even become a permanent fixture in modern kitchens.
Discover the full diversity of an excellent design line - Eurosmart excels at all outlets throughout the house. Grohe in my opinion are well up there with the leaders in tap and shower technology.

BATHROOM TREND PREDICTIONS FOR 2010

25th Mar 2010

Bathrooms Fitters UK always likes to keep one step ahead – not just with service – but also by being the first with the latest idea\'s.

A palette of colour
Used correctly, colour not only transforms a faceless room into something spectacular but it can also change our perceptions of its actual shape and size. Whilst natural colours are the most versatile colour choice for the bathroom, 2010 will see adventurous homeowners opting for a palette of more decadent coloured tiling.

Loved by fashionistas, bright, vivid hues such as red, blue, emerald green, terracotta and rust, which ooze charm, will start to take the centre stage. Bold, inviting and elegant colours can transform a shy flower of a bathroom into a head-turner, so homeowners should choose the colour that suits their own personality but also fits the type of environment they are looking for. Certain colours affect the natural light: others enhance or diminish space, so be guided by the qualities of the room itself. With these considerations in mind you’ll have the confidence to create a truly individual scheme.

Modular furniture
Modular furniture will play as much a part in the bathroom in 2010 as the bath, basin and toilet, as storage becomes a priority. Bathroom furniture won’t be about cramming as much storage in to the space as possible, it will be about choosing beautiful, practical key pieces and utilising them in a stunning and effective way.

Not only do cabinets hide the sink plumbing, but they’re excellent storage spaces and are also another way to bring style and originality to a bathroom. It won’t matter the style of the bathroom, the addition of some well thought out wall-hung furniture is an extremely good way at creating a modern minimalist look, especially where space is limited.

With more people choosing mirrors that lay flush on a wall versus traditional-style medicine cabinets, selecting a piece of furniture to house toiletries, cleaning supplies and other items will be the key important factor in 2010.

Texture
2010’s all-important look will be sophisticated and more about texture than accessories. As well as colour it will be all about texture and this trend looks set to run and run. Textured bathroom wall tiles will add depth, definition and interest to any room, creating a finish that looks great in either contemporary or traditional settings.

With increasingly longer working hours and busy family lives, the bathroom has become an important area to create a relaxing environment and truly enjoy some \'down time\'. Moving towards elegance and glamour, inspired by palaces and stately homes, with an emphasis on comfort, Damask designs and floral pattern repeats are currently the most popular look as they can create a boudoir look. Texture for the walls is both bold yet delicate and will create a desire to ‘touch’.

Baths
The fashion for freestanding baths is one that just keeps on going and going, making it still a hot trend for 2010. The key is to choose one that\'ll make a stunning statement in the bathroom, as it’ll give any room an incredibly indulgent feel.

Bathing has always been about more than just personal hygiene, and the modern bathroom is no exception with a freestanding bath creating the perfect excuse to turn your bathroom into that much craved after spa-style space.

If you don’t have the budget for a freestanding bath, why not try and create the look by positioning an inset bath in the middle of the room but add some stunning and eye-catching tiling to the sides to make it standout as a real centrepiece.

Wetrooms
The hot trend for 2010 is to create an experiential bathroom and at the forefront of this is the wetroom – the ultimate in bathroom opulence and relaxation. With style conscious homeowners increasingly taking the opportunity to pamper in their own pad, luxurious shower fittings and features such as body jets, shower columns and sophisticated showering controls are set to be introduced to create a ‘home spa’.
Still best fitted by experts and more versatile than just having a shower tray / enclosure, the wetroom allows the showering area to blend in, creating a feeling of space and openness. Plus, by truly making the most of the room available wetrooms can often also add value to the home.

Scam notice

11th Mar 2010
A scam that believed to have originated from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, which you might wish to warn your readers about.

The 'customer' contacted us by e-mail asking for a proforma invoice for a piece of equipment valued at ÂŁ15,000 and our bank details. We checked out the company as far as we could and found details of a legitimate company of the same name on the internet albeit at different address.

Last week a payment of ÂŁ58,950 was paid into our bank account. The next day an e-mail came in from the 'customer' saying they had made a mistake and could we return the balance of ÂŁ43,450 by urgent swift to the following bank:-

BANK NAME- NOOR ISLAMIC BANK
BANK ADDRESS- ROLLA SHAJAH , U.A.E
ACCOUNT NAME- IYANDA FOLARIN
ACCOUNT NUMBER-00831114750015
SWIFT CODE- NISLAEAD

We made enquiries as to which bank had actually paid over the money to our account, suspecting that there may have been a money laundering activity taking place and that we would only credit the originating bank.

On making these enquiries we discovered that the payment was not made through the banking system but a cheque was posted directly to our local bank branch with accompanying documents from P & O Ferries in Portsmouth giving some credibility to the transaction. The bank advised us that to be sure the funds remained in our account we would have to allow six working days for the cheque to clear.

It then became obvious there was a scam taking place and had we fallen for it we would have lost over ÂŁ40,000. As expected the cheque bounced this morning when it reached Barclays in London. The account did not exist and the cheque was a fraud.

Please pass this onto as many businesses as possible so that these little b******* in Dubai don't succeed.

Bathroom Heating

5th Mar 2010

Waking up to a warm bathroom on a chilly morning is one of life’s little luxuries. But having a standard radiator sat unloved in the corner is no longer an option as the latest designs come in all sorts of innovative shapes and sizes.

All prices approximate - check with your retailer

Bathrooms need to be cosy. It doesn’t matter what sort of scheme you choose – totally traditional or contemporary bathroom chic - it’s the one room that should be warm and toasty when you need it. Today’s bathroom heating designs offer something for every taste, from chunky industrial pipes to undulating wave formations, and with multifunctional pieces that double as towel warmers, mirrors or shelving units, you’ll also be getting more for your money while saving space in this smallest of rooms. Recent trends show that we’re not afraid to splash out on a designer radiator or towel rail so long as it looks the part and plays a key role in the bathroom.

Concept Z5 double radiator, from around ÂŁ1,099, B&Q

Radiator Styles

Manufacturers are constantly launching a variety of shapes and sizes such as wall-mounted heated shelving cubes and angular boxed designs. The latest trends also include curved profiles, connecting rails, coiled springs and ladder styles. A new radiator can in fact become a work of art for your bathroom wall. If you are also considering installing underfloor heating, it’s still worth having a radiator on the wall to dry towels and keep robes warm.

Haiti heated towel rail, from around ÂŁ799, Homebase

Radiator Materials

Stainless steel is one of the most popular materials with brushed and satin finishes softening the industrial effect. Glass is gradually taking off with heated glass panels that look stunning on decorative tiles. Composite stone and resin offer a more versatile solution as they can be produced in virtually any shape and colour.

Classic Radiators
If you love the old school cast iron column radiator, there are plenty of products out there from the likes of
MHS Radiators and The 21st Century Radiator Company. However, for something with a slice of history check out your nearest architectural salvage yard for some hidden gems.

Heating Options

Some radiators will be heated by the central heating system while others will be operated electrically. Think about the costs involved before you purchase and ask your supplier for advice. The benefit of an electric model is that it will heat up quickly as soon as you plug it in while a central heating version will take longer. Dual fuel models run on electricity when the central heating is turned off and are ideal for chilly summer evenings when you don’t need to heat the whole house.

Industry figureheads to speak at show

22nd Jan 2010
To date, over 240 companies are confirmed for the kbb Birmingham 2010 show, including Abode, Allied Kingswood, Carron Phoenix, CDA, Coram Showers, Cosentino, Crosswater, Croydex, De Dietrich, Eco Bathrooms, Elica, Grohe, Hepplewhite, HiB, Laufen, Matki, Pegler, Planit, Poggenpohl, Reginox, Roca, Scavolini, TC, Twyford and William Ball. New companies signed within the last few weeks include Castello Luxury Baths, Crown LifeSpace, Cuisine Sagne, Groundwork Terracotta & Stone, Inspire 2 Heat, Liebherr, Marble Heating Company, Rotpunkt Kϋchen and Swiss Taps.

kbb Birmingham 2010 seminar speakers Robin Levien, Paolo Pininfarina, Roberto Palomba and Henrik Otto, share their opinions on key trends or the next ‘big thing' for 2010 and beyond.

Understandably the recession is still having an effect on design, predicts Product Designer Robin Levien of Studio Levien: "I believe that economic conditions have a major bearing on design. It was the past 15 years of prosperity up to the current recession that gave rise to minimalism, which is a style that requires some bravery. Insecurity is making us look back again, this time it's the middle of the last century. Bright colours are back to cheer us up in furniture and accessories."

Paolo Pininfarina of Pininfarina Extra also focuses on how the recession will affect the sourcing of materials: "Due to the economical recession, I suppose manufacturers and designers are now mainly concentrated towards the exploration of new materials and the rationalisation of the manufacturing and in-house assembly processes." Here, Pininfarina highlights a current hot topic: environmental concerns.

Designer Roberto Palomba of PS+A puts an even stronger emphasis on green issues: "We must create projects that are ecologically correct! We should have a very serious approach to design in this sense. Nothing can be projected nowadays without thinking of the future of our children."

Henrik Otto of Electrolux expects things to get smaller: "You are going to see a real take off of compact ovens. Steam is going to be very big too. And you are going to see a take off en masse on induction cooking.” These thoughts are echoed by Electrolux’s Design Lab 2010 competition, this year students are invited to design home appliances that consider shrinking domestic spaces. The winners of the 2009 competition will be shown at kbb Birmingham 2010, from 21-24 March.

All of the above industry figureheads will be presenting seminars at kbb Birmingham 2010, taking place at the NEC, Birmingham from 21-24 March 2010.

Mike Lawrence, CEO of Waterline Group stated: “We are proud to be supporting the industry at kbb Birmingham 2010, and we are delighted that we will be exhibiting the latest products from our Rotpunkt range of German kitchen furniture and also delighted to showcase the Crown LifeSpace range. kbb Birmingham is the ideal forum for lots of our customers to see how exciting the total Crown format has become in the past two years”.

Popularity grows for Digital Showers

19th Jan 2010
Luxury’ has long been the bathroom buzzword and consumers are now much more ‘product savvy’ thanks to the popularity of home improvement TV programmes and magazines. Indeed, with this media glamorising luxury bathrooms and encouraging people to create their own spa-like sanctuaries at home, it is hardly surprising that there has been a marked rise in the demand for designer bathroom products.

In the world of showers, this trend for ‘wow factor’ stylish products has coincided with the growing acceptance that people nowadays are ‘time-poor’, a direct result of today’s fast paced society and busier, more hectic lifestyles. Showers, therefore, have become a lifestyle-inspired choice, providing an instant, quick and refreshing bathing solution. However, as we already know, homeowners today are no longer content to purchase products based solely on functionality and are demanding even more from their showers than ever before.

At the same time emerging technologies are also having an impact on the shower market. As with many things in our day-to-day lives, digital technology is already playing an increasingly important role and new products are constantly emerging that promise to improve our lives one way or another at the flick of a switch. Whether that is intelligent wireless heating systems, home automation systems or Sky Plus, everything appears to be going digital.

This trend has not stopped at the bathroom door either. Digital mixer showers began appearing in manufacturers’ portfolios a few years ago, representing a real advance in the showering market. Initially, however, its high price tag meant that it was reserved for the top end of the market and the technology was somewhat slow to be widely accepted. More recently though changing consumer perception and a wider range of available products has created a very real opportunity for any installer willing to sell the benefits of digital technology to customers.

For homeowners, digital mixer showers offer advanced, sophisticated features and controls, guaranteeing a truly satisfying shower experience. Achieving a minimalistic look is made simpler by the fact that the majority of plumbing is concealed and remote precision temperature and flow rate control means the days of stepping into a cold shower are over – the very height of luxury!

There are significant savings to be made too. It is well known that showers use far less water than baths but there is still some room for improvement in terms of water saving features on traditional showers. Digital mixer showers offer precise control of water flow and therefore this feature makes them an attractive proposition for the more environmentally aware consumer. There are savings to be made in terms of installation too.

As the digital mixer can be sited remotely, in the loft for example, there is no need for extensive excavation work to fit wires and pipes and therefore no need for expensive retiling. This is also a benefit for installers as installation time is greatly reduced and simplified.

Given the current economic climate and the fact that consumers are now being much more careful with money, it could be easy to assume that the cost of digital technology will be too prohibitive for many. However, that is not the case with the new Creda Digimix digital mixer shower. The new Digimix brings together the very latest in shower design, styling and performance at an affordable price.

Fully thermostatic, this stylish digital mixer shower provides the ultimate in convenience and control through a wireless remote control, which can be used up to 10m away from the base unit. Incorporating an LCD display, there are three programmable memory options available, which can be set to an individual’s preference and guaranteeing the perfect shower temperature and flow rate every time.

The remote control will signal when the shower has reached the desired temperature. The remote control can be left in the bedroom or placed in a neat wall mounted docking station inside the shower and a clever programmable timer also means that the shower will automatically turn itself off if it is left on or turned on accidently.

The Digimix is also available in two different variants, ensuring Creda Digimix will suit any system whether that be gravity, combi or high pressure.

Thanks to the many advantages offered by digital mixer showers, such as user friendly functions, compatibility with most types of plumbing systems and ease of installation, it is highly likely that this technology will dominate the thermostatic shower sector in the future. New products, like Digimix, also mean that this technology is now more widely available to a much wider range of customer, offering stylish top end technology at a far more affordable price. Those installers who take the time to familiarise themselves with the latest technology and sell the benefits of digital will soon see the economic rewards themselves.

Waterproofing Wetrooms

8th Jan 2010

For wetrooms in particular, it is vital that proper waterproofing is carried out, because tiled surfaces cannot be guaranteed waterproof without special, additional protection.

Wetrooms are becoming increasingly popular, not only in commercial applicationssuch as hotels, health clubs and leisure centres, but also in domestic situations.

More and more people are installing wetrooms in their homes, because they are stylish, contemporary, easier to clean, and as a second bathroom can increase the property's value.

But, like all tiled installations, essential protection is needed.

Impervious grout and water resistant adhesive do not necessarily stop water seeping through into the fabric of a building, especially where modern, high performance power showers throw out a lot of water at high force.

To ensure a waterproof surface the british standardsrecommends the use of impervious membranes, such as Schluter-DITRA, Homelux, and tilesafe.

This forms part of a complete wetroom solution.

Schluter-DITRA and Schluter-KERDI waterproofing membranes are integrated into the tile assembly. Tilesafe is a high quality bitumen membrane which creates a fully waterproofed solution.ďż˝

The perimeters and any membrane joints are then sealed using the waterproof sealing band Schluter-KERDI-KEBA, which must be adhered with Schluter-KERDI-COLL to complete the wetroom's waterproofing system from a single source.

In addition, the Schluter-KERDI-DRAIN floor drainage systemoffers everything required for draining water.

Trying to achieve a waterproof seal between the drain in tiled floors and the waterproofingin shower installations has traditionally caused problems.

As part of its continuing research programme, Schluter-Systems brought technology right up to date with the development of a floor drain system specially designed to overcome this long standing weak point in the construction of surface assemblies in tiled floors.

Schluter-KERDI-DRAIN upper assemblies incorporate an integrated bonding flange on the top surface, which provides a secure bond between the drain and the Schluter-DITRA waterproofing membrane.

The drain housings come with or without odour traps, and the system can connect to both horizontal and vertical pipework.

It provides a guaranteed waterproof connection on ceramic tile, natural stone, and other surface coatings.

The system works just as well on timber, as with any other type of substrate and screed.

Because it is a modular system, it can be configured for every requirement, providing a sealed waterproof drain for all sorts of commercial and domestic wet areas. Dependent on the application Bathroom fitters uk will advise you of the best available wet room products on the market today.

Duravit unveils its new flush fitting shower tray collection

3rd Jan 2010

The latest collection of Duravit flush fitting shower trays was created in collaboration with renowned architect Prof. Frank Huster. The trays provide a minimal and seamless look to the shower area and also offer the perfect solution for renovation and refurbishment projects.

A shallow depth, just 50mm accommodates the extremely low installation height often found in older buildings; the clever drainage system ensures simple and straightforward installation and, what is more, the tray can be fitted at the final stage of the refurbishment, thereby minimising any risk of damage.

The design of the new Duravit flush fitting shower tray is strictly linear, consisting of a series of right angles to not only ensure a level, seamless connection with the tiled floor but also to enable the tray to be fitted neatly with the tiling joints.

There are 14 models in sizes ranging from 800x800mm to 1600x900mm all available with a transparent AntiSlip coating which is compliant with code DIN51097 for enhanced safety whilst showering.

In addition, the outlet cover is very flat and unobtrusive, and the outlet system has a practical integrated hair filter. The tray has a 2% incline so that the water runs off at a rate of 0.7 litres/second. This means that unlike tiled models, the shower is not only easier to clean, but also more hygienic.

These ultra low profile shower trays have been fitted with a new drainage system, and installation requires just a few simple steps.

First of all, the plumber attaches a frame to determine the position of the shower tray. Then, using a template that is supplied by Duravit, he or she drills the core hole and chisels open a slit in the floor to the outlet pipe. The depth of the drill hole is calculated according to an exact formula: 140mm minus the height of the floor structure. Then, the lower section of the outlet system is connected to the drain pipe. Next, the tanking layer seals off the shower tray area before laying the tiles. The outlet system is also completely sealed, ensuring that the floor-level shower is fully protected against water damage. The plumber then aligns the pedestal and attaches the upper section of the outlet system to the shower tray before the tray itself is put in place.

Aquavision exhibits new waterproof HD ready televisions

27th Dec 2009
Aquavision will be exhibiting their most extensive line-up ever at this year’s ISE Exhibition. Two new waterproof televisions will be launched in the Flamingo range – 17” and 24” – mainly for contractors, hotels and developers. These new models are both HD ready and feature 16:9 wide screens, RS232 control and digital Freeview.

Standard glass finishes are Polar White, black and MirrorVision (when the television is switched off, the glass takes the form of a mirror that is suitable for shaving, make-up etc. When it is turned on, the mirror gives way to the television screen) and custom finishes are available on larger orders.

Two new Heated TowelRail TVs will be introduced at ISE. The T-Rail T1 and T-Rail T4 both incorporate the new wide screen HD ready waterproof 17" Aquavision LCD television with a MirrorVision panel, built into a bespoke state-of-the-art chrome towel rail. The Aquavision Towel Rail TVs are ideal for installing into even the most recently completed bathroom with the minimum of disruption with just four mounting points and two cables. The T-Rail T1 measures H820 x W530mm and the T-Rail T4 is H1800 x W530mm.

The S4 high-end range, has been updated and expanded to include three full HD models – the 24”, 32” and 40”, whilst the 19”, 26” and 46” are all HD ready. All S4 televisions feature RS232 control, digital Freeview, a component video, S-Video and analogue PC input, single or twin HDMI inputs full scart connection and built in games.

The long awaited Aquavision 46” full daylight visible, HD ready television will also be on show. It allows the screen to be viewed in direct sunlight and is therefore ideal for installation on the patio or by the swimming pool. This in-wall television will be the centrepiece for the full outdoor range which will be launched later in 2010 and will include a 32” and 40” free standing model in a waterproof case. As with the rest of the Aquavision range, it features a heated screen to prevent misting-up and is fully waterproof. The television will also feature automatic temperature controls to allow it to be left outside all year.

The new bathroom range comprises four sizes, 17”, 24”, 32 and 40”. These widescreens will be available in full HD and HD ready and feature digital tuners. The two smaller models will be available in the standard glass finish whilst the 32” and 40” are only available in MirrorVision.

Also on the company’s stand will be The VaniTV which combines a mirror unit available in several sizes (portrait or landscape) available in flush or surface mount options with the 17” Aquavision screen imbedded in the mirror; the recently launched Bespoke range, Kitchen TV and Marine Range.

BATHROOM TREND PREDICTIONS FOR 2010

Bathroom Fitters UK always likes to keep one step ahead – not just with products and service – but also by being the first on the high street with the latest trends.

Steve Meyrick, bathroom planning expert at Bathroom Fitters UK , looks at the key emerging trends for the bathroom in 2010:

With increasingly longer working hours and busy family lives, the bathroom has become an important area to create a relaxing environment and truly enjoy some 'down time'.

The key is to choose one that'll make a stunning statement in the bathroom, as it’ll give any room an incredibly indulgent feel.

BRITAIN is a nation of bickerers, 51% of men and 45% of women find their partner more stressful than work and the average Brit couple argues five times a day.

Survey findings released today* reveal that Brits are really getting on each others nerves, and the problem is in the bathroom with over 70% of Brits complaining that their partner has bad bathroom habits.

The study conducted by BlanX Whitening Toothpaste reveals that recession stressed Brits are arguing over their little bad habits more than the bigger things such as money and family.

It is not just men who are causing their partner strife, the survey reveals that women also have annoying little habits that are driving their men wild and making domestic living more stressful than work - in fact, more men (6% more) complained that their partner was worse than work.

30% of men complained about their partner using their toothbrush, over half complained that their partner leaves their wet towels on the floor and a whopping 80% of the men surveyed complained that their partner uses their razor to shave their legs.

For Women it is the usual suspect of leaving the toilet seat up with 76% of women stating this as an annoying habit, 2 in 3 women complained that their partner uses up the juice or milk out of the fridge and then puts the empty carton back and seven out of ten women complained that their partner left the top off their toothpaste.

Charlotte Smith from BlanX comments: "We all know that men and women have their differences but it was shocking to discover that British couples find their relationships more stressful than work.

"Coming home from a long day at work and then finding little things that your partner does to irritate you is fairly annoying but the results of our survey show that is a bigger problem than we thought."

The bathroom is the most common battle-ground for men and women with over half of all complaints emanating from the smallest room in the house!

Self-cleaning bathroom on the way

8th Nov 2009

Nanotechnology may yet rescue us from the drudgery of the weekly ritual of blitzing the bathroom.

Scientists in Australia have developed an environmentally friendly coating containing special nanoparticles that could do the job of cleaning and disinfecting for us.

"If you have self-cleaning materials, you can do the job properly without having to use disinfectants and other chemicals," says researcher Rose Amal at the Particles and Catalysts Research Group, University of New South Wales, where the coating is being developed.

Previously self-cleaning materials were limited to outdoor applications because ultraviolet light was required to activate the molecules in the coatings.

Less time cleaning the bathroom is rather appealing
Mary Taylor, Friends of the Earth
These surfaces contain tiny particles of titanium dioxide, which become excited when they absorb ultraviolet light with a wavelength of less than 380 nanometres.

Light activated

This gives the particles an oxidizing ability stronger than chlorine bleach. The excited particles can break down organic compounds and kill bacteria.

The new coating contains modified particles of titanium dioxide, which are doped with other cations like iron or vanadium and anions like oxygen, nitrogen or carbon.

This coating can absorb light at the higher wavelengths in visible light, such as the bathroom light.

Lab experiments revealed the surface of coated glass could kill the bacteria E. coli(Escherichia coli) and degrade volatile organic compounds in visible light.

The oxidising properties also mean fungus cannot grow on the surface. And because the coating is hydrophobic - it does not like water - the water simply slides away carrying any dirt with it, rather than gathering as droplets.

Using the coating in baths and sinks would not pose any problems with skin irritation, according to Amal.

"When the bath is filled, the water would attenuate the light so I don't think the surface would activate. It will only be active if the light can reach the surface,"

she says.

Possible disadvantages

Friends of the Earth spokesperson Mary Taylor said that if materials like this could prolong the lifetime of an object, this would be an advantage in environmental terms.

But she warned: "Such a hi-tech material might have some disadvantages.

"We would have to consider, for example, whether the material could be recycled or disposed of safely, and how much more energy went into production of the raw materials and its manufacture."

However, she added: "Less time cleaning the bathroom is rather appealing, and there might be some special uses, maybe in hospitals, where such materials could be a boon."

Wetroom news feed

3rd Nov 2009

Wetrooms continue to see rapid growth in popularity with UK consumers and they are now having a major impact on bathroom layout and design.

To reflect this growing trend, the Bathroom Fitters UK now has a new dedicated section on its website. It takes a closer look at some of the key benefits and installation issues. The concept of the domestic wetroom is relatively recent but the idea is now fully developed. A number of manufacturers, have designed ‘tanking systems’ which, when installed correctly, fully seal the bathroom against water leaks. A wetroom, therefore, is a fully watertight bathroom with no separate shower tray.

The ‘walk-in’ shower area is usually level with the surrounding floor but with a slight slope to the drain which is fitted directly into the floor. The shower unit and controls are fitted to one of the walls within the wetroom. They are particularly useful where level entry to the shower area is essential — for instance, for use by anyone in a wheelchair or someone with mobility issues. Wetrooms give a feeling of spaciousness and minimalism. They make the best use of the available space and don’t, necessarily, require a fixed shower screen. Furthermore, without any steps in the room there is less risk of slips and trips. Cleaning is also so much easier and hygiene levels are excellent. Some wetroom designs include a ‘wet zone’. Here, the showering area is raised above the surrounding floor by up to 150mm. Stepping up into a wet zone may be required to meet particular site conditions, but in this case the level floor concept becomes compromised. Essential planning Careful planning is, of course, a key element in any new wetroom installation. The positioning of all water and power services should be considered before the tanking process commences, since the sealed area should not be punctured or pierced after installation. The installation process can be quite detailed, depending on site conditions, and allowance should be made for the room being completely out of use for several days. Wetrooms are totally water sealed by the application of special sealing tapes, waterproof underlays or membranes and ‘tanking compound’ which, when fully cured, creates a fully water tight area. The application of the tanking compound is carried out before the installation of the wall and floor finishes. Tiling and panelling alone will not create a wet room since some tiles and grout may be porous. This installation of wetroom should only be carried out by a competent person and manufacturer’s instructions should be adhered to carefully to ensure correct drainage and no leaks. Joinery, tiling and plumbing skills are required. Sometimes electrics have to he relocated so it is important that all regulations are adhered to.

All manufacturers supply comprehensive instructions, and some provide an installation video to make the whole process so much easier. Manufacturers’ websites offer more details. Online advice The wetroom, with its major benefits for people of all ages and abilities, has seen sales grow year on year. They are available from merchants, specialist retailers, dedicated web shops and major DIY stores. There is no doubt that they are here to stay, and to reflect this we have recently launched a completely new section on the subject in its website. The section went live in April and is already attracting considerable interest. The site describes the main features and benefits of the wetrooms.

Technology ideas for your bathroom -

24th Oct 2009
With waterproof TVs and mirror LCDs - there's no excuse to overlook the bathroom when designing your ultimate smart bathroom. Bathroom Fitters UKcan show you how to create the ideal master bathroom.

There are many exciting options for smartening up your home: plasma TVs, "invisible" speakers, security cameras that plug into the Internet and touchscreens that operate everything including the kitchen sink are just a few of the cool products that can easily capture a homeowner's fancy. But the key is to select items that will suit your lifestyle and fit into your family's routines. Remember, as long as the electronics you choose enhance the comfort, convenience and enjoyment of your home, you can't go wrong.

THE MASTER BATHROOM

Lighting, music, video and soft lighting are luxuries your bathroom deserves. Today, a bubble bath is not the only form of relaxation you can pursue in your master bathroom. ‘Invisible' music systems, flat-screen TVs, electronically controlled showers, whirlpool tubs, and elegant, restful lighting can turn the bathroom into a luxurious, spa-like retreat. You can watch TV while you soak or listen to the news as you brush your teeth.

And don't worry about exposing electronic amenities such as these to water. Almost every manufacturer offers a line of products that are completely safe to use in the bathroom.

Singing near the drain
Most people have sung in the shower. It's no wonder speakers have become such a popular bathroom amenity. The best place to put your bathroom speakers is either in the ceiling or in the wall. Most manufacturers make models that can withstand the humidity of a steaming bathroom, and some even offer ones that can be mounted within the tiles of a typical shower stall. The CD player, radio tuner and other audio equipment should stay right in the family room where they belong. A music distribution system can feed the tunes directly to the bathroom speakers. If you'd like to be able to control the music from the bathroom, be sure to have a keypad installed. Have your installer mount the keypad near the entrance to the room so that you can kick-start the music the second you walk in.
Spa baths have become entertainment wonderlands, fitted with speakers, big-screen TVs and coloured lights. Many now come with built-in controls or a waterproof handheld remote.

Getting Ready
When your bathroom is outfitted with a high-tech bathtub and shower, you might never want to leave the space. In the morning, however, most people simply don't have the time for a good, long soak. If haste is important to your morning ritual, a TV near the mirror, good lighting and a telephone can all be helpful tools.
A flat-panel TV is a smart choice because it takes up absolutely no counter space. Ask your installer to mount it to a wall where you can easily see it, so that you can catch the weather and news whilst shaving or applying make-up. You might even consider placing the TV behind the mirror. The mirror must be made of two-way glass for this option to work. When you turn on the TV (a standard remote control works), the image appears through the glass. When it's off, all you see is the mirror. Be sure to place speakers in the ceiling above the mirror, so that you can clearly hear the TV.

Good lighting is critical in any master bathroom. You might prefer how your bathroom looks when the lights are dim, but getting ready for work in this light might be cause for regret later on in the day.

A lighting control system can help you achieve any look you want, including something that suits your entertainment systems and is also that's practical for grooming needs.
For a space with tile or marble flooring, installing a radiant floor-heating system is a classy and comfortable touch. With the floors exposed during construction, you'll have the liberty of laying down any type of under-floor heating system you like.

As you dry off, you can use the bathroom telephone to call the office or wake up the rest of the family. A multi-line, multi-extension telephone system lets every telephone in the house function like an intercom. Plus, if an incoming telephone line is being used by someone in your household, you can use the bathroom telephone to select an open line so you can make those important business calls before you leave for work.

Trip to the Loo
One of the worst things about visiting the bathroom in the middle of the night is being blinded by bright lights. Using a dimmer switch instead of a toggle switch is one way to bring the lights down to an eye-friendly level. Unfortunately, when you're half asleep, using a dimmer can be downright difficult. It's so much easier to press a button as you stumble into the bathroom that brightens just a few of the lights to help you find your way to the sink or toilet. Specify back-lit buttons on the keypad so you can read them in the dark.
